What can I expect after surgery?

Depending on your particular procedure, your recovery process may vary.

Typically speaking, your breasts will be bruised and swollen after any kind of breast surgery. You'll most likely need to wear a surgical bra in order to prevent unnecessary movement from stretching your sutures.

The recovery process for invasive surgery is not easy. It can take anywhere from a few months or longer to fully recover from any breast enhancement procedure.

Planning for your recovery is very important. If you want a quick and speedy recovery from your surgery, the best advice is to simply folllow your surgeon's recovery guidelines.

You will need to plan appropriately and have someone drive you home after your surgery. You will also need assistance during the first few days following your surgery. Also, your surgeon will prescribe medication; it is very important that you take them as directed.

How long will I need to stay in the hospital?

Most women who undergo breast enhancement surgeries are back home within their own bed just a few hours after surgery. This may vary, of course, depending on your particular procedure and whether or not you experience any complications during surgery. Your surgeon can provide a more thorough answer to this question in relation to the type of surgery you're having.

When can I return to work?

Your surgeon will let you know when you can return to work. However, most women return to work within seven to ten days after their surgery. Of course, you will be restricted from physically demanding work and you should not lift your arms above shoulder level until your surgeon says it's ok for you to do so.

A light duty work environment will obviously present less of a risk if you return to work, while jobs that requite a lot of lifting and raising your arms above shoulder level will most likely require that you stay home a bit longer.

When can I start exercising again?

It can take anywhere from four weeks to several months before your body is capable of strenuous exercise again. It depends on your physical condition and your overall health; the better shape you're in and the healthier you are, the sooner you will be be able to start exercising again.

The easiest way to expedite your recovery is to provide the optimal environment for your body to fully recover. Basically, give yourself plenty of rest. Do not overexert yourself or allow yourself to experience any unnecessary stress (physical or emotional). You need to take it easy during the recovery process. And, most importantly, you need to explicitly follow your plastic surgeon's recovery advice.

How long until my body is fully recovered from the procedure?

Different breast enhancement procedures will require different lengths of recovery time. For breast augmentation, it can take only a few months for you to feel like you're fully recovered. The pain will usually subside within a month - it could take much longer for the swelling to dissipate. Although you could be back to work within just a few weks after your surgery, it could potentially take a full year before your body completely adjusts to the implants.
